REFLECTIONS BY THEOLOGIAN-ACTIVIST CHARLES BAYER

Friday, July 9, 2021

Charles Bayer has passed from this life.

The Reverend Charles H. Bayer passed away on July 26, 2021, at Pilgrim Place in Claremont, California. He was a congregational minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and also a founding member, long-time supporter, and key advisor of the Disciples Justice Action Network (DJAN). He wrote eight books on theology and church life, and called himself a "jack-leg theologian." He was a political columnist, a city politician, an active member of a political party, a teacher of theology through the Disciples Seminary Foundation, a board member of a progressive think tank, a coordinator of Progressive Christians Uniting. But according to Charles, he was "mainly a pastor." Let us all keep the family, friends, and loved ones of this amazing pastor, professor, and prophet in our prayers; and, as he now, after 91 years of life, becomes more fully part of God's eternal life, may his memory be a blessing and an inspiration to all of us.
